An instrument (derivative) which derives its value from the performance or price movement of a financial instrument or index. Examples of financial derivatives include: equity option, bond option, stock futures, stock index option, etc.

Derivatives that their value is based on non-financial assets or other factors/ variables include: energy derivatives, commodity derivatives, weather derivatives, insurance derivative, currency derivatives, etc.
