One of the six items/ substances (asnaf ribawiah or ribawi items) that are sold by weight and measure, literally: gold, silver, wheat, dates, salt, and barley). When exchanged (bartered) in kind, ribawi items must be exchanged in equal measure and with instantaneous transfer of possession (taqabudh) to avoid receipt or payment of riba in trade (riba al-fadhl). Otherwise, the exchange is considered impermissible/ unlawful from a shari’a perspective as it is tantamount to riba.
Sinf ribawi (صنف ربوي) is Arabic for riba-embedded item (riba-bearing item).
