Assignment


The designation made by a clearing corporation requesting a specified option writer to purchase in case of a put option or sell in case of a call option the underlying futures contracts or security once that option has been exercised, especially with an early exercise.

“Assigned” refers to the chosen seller or writer of an exercised option.

In the context of swaps, assignment (swap assignment) has its specific meaning.
