Primary Sources of Shari’ah


Shari’ah holds center stage of Islam as a religion (deen) as it defines the route Muslims have to follow in matters of religious ritual and every aspect of economic, political, social, and personal life. It is derived primarily from two primary sources: the Quran and the Sunnah. The first source of shari’ah- the Quran- is the actual word of Allah revealed to His Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) through oracle (wahi- Angel Gabriel). The Sunnah, the second source of shari’a (figuratively speaking, shari’a in action) is the authentic traditions and sayings of the Prophet, as collected by specialists in Hadith.
