A fund of liquid assets (cash or cash equivalents) which a company earmarks to pay for a takeover of another company or to defend itself against a takeover by another company. A company is said to be difficult to take over when it has a large war chest, whereby it can stave off a potential takeover by buying back its shares and take other defensive measures.
