An Islamic investment account which is subject to certain restrictions imposed by the account holder with respect to the purpose, geographical distribution, and way of investing his funds. The Islamic financial institution or bank may be not allowed by investment account holders to commingle its funds with the restricted investment account funds available for investment. Other restrictions may relate to the types of transactions, subcontracting, collateralization, guaranteeing, etc.
For example, an investment account holder could set a condition that the Islamic bank should refrain from investing his funds through credit sales or installment sales, or that it will not subcontract the investment operations to third parties, etc.
The restricted investment account is known for short as RIA.
