The public trading market that is formed once an initial public offering (IPO) has been distributed and the stock has started trading. In this market, trading activity of a stock takes place immediately after an operating business’s stock becomes publicly tradable.

An aftermarket is commonly associated with initial public offerings, but also comes into existence following a reverse merger.
