Intermediate Risk Tranche


A layer of loss absorption in a collateralized debt obligation (CDO) or any similar structures that is positioned between the senior tranche (lowest risk) and a junior tranche (equity tranche, with highest risk). This tranche absorbs any losses that the equity tranche is unable to absorb until the intermediate risk tranche’s principal is also exhausted.

It is also known as an mezzanine tranche.
