Triple Witching Hour


The last hour before the market closing in which options and futures on stock indexes expire on the same day. Traders and arbitrageurs flock in a frenzy to set off trading in futures, options, and underlying securities. During this hour, investment positions are usually unwound, bringing about large price movements in underlying securities. This hour occurs on the third Fridays of March, June, September, and December.
