The illegal practice of spreading negative information or false rumors in order to manipulate a stock price with the aim of driving it down and purchasing it at a bargain price once its price has actually dropped. A scammer tries, usually on the internet, to publish and distribute misleading news about a specific firm in order to negatively affect the price of its share which he intends to buy.
