A barrier option which has additional extending features such as an initial protection period during which the option cannot be deactivated or knocked out, or a contingent knock-out mechanism (e.g., a two-asset barrier option is only knocked out if the other asset touches an upper barrier).
Examples of extended barrier options include protected barrier options and rainbow barrier options.
