Arabic (حديث موقوف) for a hadeeth (prophetic tradition) in which the prophet’s expressions, actions, approval/ disapproval or generally a description of an issue/ matter/ incident are narrated through or conveyed by a sahabi (companion: male or female) in his/ her own words, not in the exact words of the prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). This holds whether the chain of narrators is interrupted or not. Isnad (direct attribution) is not to the exact saying, statement, or verbal expressions of the prophet.

Narration through a sahabi may pass through tabi’een (followers) or followers of tabi’een.

Examples of this type of hadeeth (report) is what was narrated by Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): “address people in a way (i.e., in words) understandable to them”.
