A debtor who fails to repay or extinguish a debt (dain/ dayn) that is due. Under shari’a, it is impermissible (haram) for a debtor who is solvent to refuse to pay a debt that has fallen due, without any reasonable or legitimate reason, after being normally requested by the creditor to pay the debt.

Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) was reported to have said: “default in payment on the part of a solvent debtor is unjust” and “delay in payment by a solvent debtor would provide a legal ground for his being publicly disgraced and punished”.
