An ownership that is enjoyed by having a stake in a publicly-traded company (in the form of securities) or having control over voting shares of that security. An individual or company with a beneficial ownership exceeding 5 percent of a company is required to inform the securities and exchange authority (such as the SEC) of such ownership by filing a specific type of document (in the U.S., it is known as schedule 13D).
