Preferred Equity


A type of equity with certain rights and features that distinguish it from ordinary/ common equity. Preferred equity (e.g., preferred stock) is a component of share capital that has features not possessed by common stock, including properties of both equity and debt, and for that very reason it is considered a hybrid equity investment.

Preferred equity is superior in terms of interest (entitlement to payment of interest) to common equity but subordinate to debt.
