A hedge that involves offsetting an exposure to a risk factor, wholly or partially, by an opposite exposure to that risk factor. This type of hedge does not require the use of sophisticated instruments such as options, swaps, futures, etc.

For example, investing in gold might be a natural hedge against inflation, other factors held constant. Likewise, variable-rate debt could be matched with cash and short-term fixed-income securities (its natural hedge).
